Ashot I (Armenian: Աշոտ Ա; c. 820 – 890) was a king of Armenia who oversaw the beginning of Armenia's second golden age (862 – 977). He was the son of Smbat VIII the Confessor and was a member of the Bagratuni dynasty. In medieval Armenian historiography, he is frequently referred to as Ashot the Great (Ashot Mets) in recognition of his role in restoring Armenian sovereignty.
