February 1118 – 15 May 1174), commonly known as Nur ad-Din or Nureddin (lit. "Light of the Faith" in Arabic) and al-Malik al-Adil (lit. "the Just King" in Arabic), was a Turkoman member of the Zengid dynasty.
Nur al-Din's political and epigraphic representation in Syria increasingly departed from the Turkish-Persian traditions employed by his father. His monumental inscriptions abandoned Turkish and Persian titulature in favour of Arabic titles, a transformation interpreted by historians as emphasizing his position as the ruler of an Arab state. He reigned from 1146 to 1174.
