Improved Memorial Biography of Mehmed VI Vahideddin

Mehmed VI Vahideddin (born 14 January 1861, Dolmabahçe Palace, Constantinople – died 16 May 1926, Sanremo, Italy) was the 36th and last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the penultimate Ottoman Caliph. He ascended the throne on 4 July 1918 following the death of his half-brother, Mehmed V, and reigned until the abolition of the sultanate on 1 November 1922. After being deposed, he left Istanbul aboard a British warship and spent his remaining years in exile, passing away in Sanremo in 1926. (en.wikipedia.org)

Born into the Ottoman dynasty as the youngest surviving son of Sultan Abdulmejid I and Gülüstü Kadın, Mehmed VI was orphaned early and raised in the palace by the consort Şâyeste Hanım. He spent much of his early life in seclusion and did not assume a prominent political role until the deaths of his older siblings positioned him as heir. (know-your-history.com)

Mehmed VI’s reign coincided with the final collapse of the Ottoman Empire. He inherited a state ravaged by World War I, and shortly after his accession, the Armistice of Mudros enabled Allied forces to occupy strategic points across the empire, including its capital. His government pursued a policy of accommodation with the occupying powers, including signing the Treaty of Sèvres—a pact which carved up large parts of Anatolia. (know-your-history.com)

During this period, the nationalist movement led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha emerged in Anatolia, rejecting both the treaty and the sultan’s authority. Mehmed VI opposed the nationalists, dissolved parliament, and his Istanbul administration remained under Allied influence, while the Ankara-based Grand National Assembly grew in power. In November 1922, the assembly abolished the sultanate, effectively ending his reign. (know-your-history.com)

After his deposition, Mehmed VI departed Istanbul aboard a British warship—a symbolic and poignant exit from the empire that had spanned centuries. He lived in exile in Sanremo, Italy, where he died on 16 May 1926 at the age of 65. He was subsequently buried in Damascus, as returning to Turkey—or being interred there—was not permitted.
